Main Committee Message

Dear members,

RAHRC is looking forward to welcoming you back after what hopefully have been very enjoyable summer holidays. The summer is typically a period with limited activity at the Club but we would like to thank the various performing bands beating the heat and still providing entertainment!

This does however not mean that behind the scenes the Club was not busy and we would like to officially announce that we are now active on social media! Our Facebook and Instagram page will offer an easy way for members to check what is happening at the Club.

If you would like to follow us, these are our accounts:

Facebook: Ras Al Hamra – The Club
Instagram: #rahtheclub
Our plans to further improve communication to our members do not stop here and we aim to launch a new RAHRC website near the end of the year.

Looking ahead, in the coming weeks many activities will start again and we are confident there must something for you as well. Trial a tennis or swimming lesson, prepare for an off-road adventure, see what is going on at the Art Centre or have a look at all the other (water) sports offered! Or maybe there is an event that will appeal to you, the event calendar can be found here.

I would like to end my message with a couple of ‘did you knows?’ that you might not be aware of and that highlight the wealth of options at the Club.

Did you know?
• Members are able to rent a kayak, SUP or different types of sailing boats for their own use (no reservation required). Take a look at the charges here and contact the Club Safety Post (red container structure) when you get to the Club.

• You can top-up the cards of your dependants online. This is especially useful for (teenage) children who visit the Club independently and can then purchase something without having unlimited access to parents’ funds. Visit this page for more information.

• You can order your fresh bread from the Clubhouse!

• It is possible to book a variety of different venues at the Club for your private event. From Sohar Garden, meeting rooms to the Sports Hall. Have a look at our website here.

• We have a lovely library on site run by volunteers and accessible to all RAHRC member. It holds a large selection of Arabic, English and Dutch books, including ones for children.

• RAHRC houses over 45 sections that organise a multitude of activities, courses and events that make the Club truly unique. They are always looking for more volunteers and we encourage anyone who would like to know more to check the information guide and contact the sections. Alternatively you can contact front office for assistance rahrc@pdo.co.om.

We hope you will have a great new season at the Club. Please also work with us to make it a safe one, for example, you can refresh your knowledge of our road traffic rules here.

Best wishes,
On behalf of the Main Committee
Emma Goelema – Project Secretary (communications)

SAILING SECTION

The RAH Sailing Section conducted a short course on “Sailing Start Sequence”,
the course was run and conducted by the chief instructor Joe Bildstein. The course focused on the start flag sequence, tips, tricks, how to be on the start line at the right time , how helm and crew should work together. Additional subjects were the rules while racing when it comes to rounding a mark, overtaking, port and starboard rules. 3 hrs of theory were followed by a practical session on the water. Boats were asked to approach the start line in a 2min interval, based on what was taught on land. A total of 12 sailors attended the course. Lots of happy smiling faces.

Power Boat Courses

"RAHRC is delighted to become a RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Recognised Training Centre for Powerboating. After months of planning and developing our training we will now be able to offer internationally recognised qualifications.

The RYA provides professional qualifications through both practical and theoretical training. It complements these training courses with books, DVD's and E courses to assist people in all disciplines from novice to expert.

The RYA training schemes span 2,500 RYA recognised training centres the length and breadth of the UK and in 58 countries around the world including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Indonesia, Thailand, and the USA .

Earlier in the summer Mike Hart (RAHRC Waterfront Manager and RYA Powerboat Trainer) ran a RYA Powerboat Instructor Course and 4 candidates were successful in qualifying as RYA Powerboat Instructors. Two of these were Faisal and Murshid who work in the CSP (Club Safety Post). The other two are club members - Dirk Gramkow and Mathaeus Walcher. Congratulations to all who achieved this prestigious award.

From October onwards we will be running RYA powerboat courses. More information will follow when the programme has been agreed.
