Ras al Hamra Boat-club:  2012 OOISS RAHBC Commodore's Cup
20th January & 17th February

The 2012 OOISS Commodore's cup is a race in two parts: 20/Jan & 17/Feb (counts double). The sailors were lucky with excellent wind on both days, which resulted in some exciting races. Dave & Victoria seemed to be unstoppable in their Viper, leading after the first day and also going strong on day 2. However, a problem with their boat gave them bad results in race 3 and 4, ultimately costing them the overall victory. Giles & Jules, fast as always in their Hobie 16 'DoubleDutch' were the most consistent sailors over the two days and took the famous 'Commodore's Cup' home. Congratulations Giles & Jules! A more detailed write-up and the full results are below.

The 2012 edition is the fifth time the Commodore's Cup is raced. The Cup was initiated in 2007 as a farewell race to the then RAHBC Commodore Volker Vahrenkamp. Volker offered the cup which can hold 2 Champagne Bottles. The Commodore's cup is race for catamarans up to 21 ft. The boats race on handicap as defined by the SCHRS (Small Catamaran Handicap Rating System) adjusted for local RAHBC conditions (age/condition of boats and ranking of the Helm). This is done to try and give everyone a fair chance to win the cup (rather than the best sailor!).

The 2007 cup was won by the new Commodore, Tony van Thiel, mainly because of his boat, a 20ft Hobie Miracle. The Miracle also won him the 2009 and 2010 events. In 2011 he was beaten by 1 point by the father/son combination of Rob and Michiel on their H-16.
